Finding good quality, organic, whole wheat bread is not always easy when you are traveling. In England you will find organic bread at Waitrose (a high-end supermarket). They sell the Duchy Organics breads and some organic loaves that they make (but they are not whole wheat).
We spent two months in Nailsworth (south of Stroud) earlier this year and bought bread from Hobbs House Bakery (shown in photo), who produce a variety of breads, many organic and many whole grain. They also sell at the Saturday Stroud Farmers’ Market and have shops in Bristol, Tetbury and Chipping Sodbury. Their bread is very good.
Many towns in the Cotswolds have a bakery, but these do not always produce artisanal quality breads.
Dan Lepard, who wrote the book “The Daily Loaf” and runs a website about baking bread, posted a great article listing the good bakeries around England, by region – Keeping track of the best bread and bakeries in Britain (thanks for the link Marta!). If you have a trip to England planned check the article to find his recommended bakeries.
Hobbs House Bakery is listed for Gloucestershire. He also lists the Authentic Bread Company (Strawberry Hill Farm, Strawberry Hill, Newent – western Gloucestershire, Forest of Dean) who sell their bread through shops in the area (I have not seen this bread, but will look for it next time).
Those toasted tea cakes are fun, but for your daily bread check out these quality bread bakers.
