First Look at Slow Europe

– First Look – Coup d’Oeil – Primo Sguardo – Have a Butchers – A Primera Vista – Einen Blick –

I am very pleased to announce that we have launched Slow Europe! We are still adding new vacation rental resources to our database and adding new countries (Germany and Switzerland are next), but we wanted everyone to get a first look now so people can start using the site and we can get some feedback.

What the heck is Slow Europe?

It is a list of recommended vacation rental agencies and other resources, listed by country and region. Click the “Vacation Rentals” tab, then find the country and region you are interested in. We have information on each company and a link to their site.

We are not a vacation rental agency. We are not a directory site where companies pay to be listed. We are not a travel agent. We are a resource for travelers looking for vacation rentals in Europe.

We do not list individual places rented by the owner, but we do list our recommended rent-by-owner directory sites and we list farms with vacation rentals or groups of apartments run by the owner.

** If you are new to vacation rentals in Europe, read our introduction to vacation rentals.

Send us your reviews and your comments!

I would love to get some vacation rental reviews in the next few weeks (other than mine which I am still adding) before the official announcement of the site. You can only review an agency, farm or resource that we have listed on the site.

To add a review, find the company by the company search or from our vacation rental pages. Click “More Information” for the company and you get to the company page where you see other reviews and can add yours. You have to register to submit a review, but it is quick and easy.

  • If you recommend a vacation rental agency or resource that I have not listed on the site, please email me.
  • If you want to review a vacation rental agency  that is not on the site, please email me.
  • If you run a vacation rental agency and are not listed, but think you should be, email me.

** Email Pauline.

Thank Yous

Thank you to Marta for finding the best resources for France and helping me with Italy. And thank you to Shannon for finding the best resources for Spain. Thanks to Valerie for editing and writing. Thanks to Kathy for reviewing our France information.

Thanks to my sponsors and affiliates for being with me from the start of this new site.

Thanks to Steve for designing and building a wonderful database for collecting and displaying our vacation rental resources and reviews. Thank you for doing a last edit on my pages.

Thanks to my friends in the Slow Travel community who taught me everything I know about travel in Europe and vacation rentals.

This is just phase 1. We have big plans 🙂

This Looks Kinda Familiar

Anyone who knows my old site, Slow Travel, will want to say “aren’t you just doing the same thing again?” Well, yes, it turns out that I am. I started Slow Travel in 2000 with much the same intention that I am starting Slow Europe today. I want to have lists of the best vacation rental resources for Europe, vacation rental reviews, some basic travel planning information and photos.

Slow Travel grew into a large site and community and was a wonderful experience for me. I sold the site at the end of 2006 and had nothing more to do with the site by the end of 2007. I took a couple of months off (we went to England), then thought “now what?” So I started to build a site again, this time narrowing the focus to just vacation rentals and just Europe.

I am very excited to be running a site again (I also started Cotswolder last year) and hope you will find good travel information here.

Here we go!

Post any questions or comments here or email me. Read more about us and why we created Slow Europe.

  1. Go, Pauline!
Congratulations on the site launch. Looking forward to seeing what’s next. 🙂

  2. Thanks everyone! Today I send out my first “newsletter” to everyone who subscribed on the site – http://www.sloweurope.com/about/subscribe.php – using Constant Contact. Always something new to learn – took me hours to set up my template. I have been hearing from vacation rentals businesses already and will be adding some new ones.

Hi Mat! The thing I like about Pair? Great support and Obama ran his site with them. The thing I don’t like? They hate WordPress. They sell Movable Type but if you mention WordPress to them, they tell you to get a dedicated server. As if the traffic on this blog is going to shut down a shared server – I wish!! I used MT on SlowTrav, but WP is much better – better design, better CSS, better HTML.

I am running cohenkenny and a few small sites on Media Temple which I love because my web design guru Zeldman recommends them and I like their control panel and features much better, but they use a grid system and it was going down a lot about six months ago. It seems to be stable now. Their customer support is good but it takes 24 hrs to get a reply and with Pair you hear within the hour.

But enough shop talk 🙂 Thanks for the link – great looking plugins! I only run the blog with WP, the site is done in Dreamweaver and Steve did all the PHP – MySQL programming.

  3. This commnet page is displaying normally, but the original blog page was cut off over on the left. It must be just me, since no one else has commented on this, but I still wanted to let you know.
