We arrived in England the first week of May in 2010. Last month we had our five year anniversary of living here. Five years!! My big dream was to spend five years in the Cotswolds. Dream accomplished.
When I was younger I dreamed of spending a year or two traveling. Steve and I traveled in the US for a year, then in Europe for a year. About a month after we got back from Europe, temporarily living in Canada while we figured out how to move to the US permanently, a friend asked me “so what’s your big dream now?” What? I just did it. Do we always have to be working on a big dream?
No big dream now, just a bunch of little ones. To do more walking and hiking, spend a month in France, travel to a few more places – Greece, Israel, Spain, see more of the United Kingdom. Oh, yeah, and I should bloody learn to speak French.
These five years were everything that I wanted. We have walked miles and miles in the Cotswolds. I love the English summer, and the other seasons are good too. We fell in love with Cornwall. We did two or three trips each year to the continent. We fell back in love with Italy. We went to Sicily!
It looks like we are staying in England. We are about to give a new area a try – south-west Dorset. Unfortunately it is not easy to find a nice house to rent in that area. We drove down to look at one but it was taken by the time we got there. We dithered over another one, and it was scooped up by someone else. So I check my email every day waiting to find a new home.
And the one piece of bad news about our life in England. My Facebook friends went through the whole drama with me (thank you). Our wonderful cat Buddy, who moved with us from Santa Fe, to Boulder, to the Cotswolds, and who loved it here, died in February at the age of 15. We both miss him. It is only because he is gone that we are planning to move. This house and garden was paradise for him.
But, back to the good things – Happy Anniversary us!!
