A Week in Burgundy

Our September trip to France with Chris is becoming a regular event. This year we decided to spend our week in Burgundy, south-east of Paris. This area was new to us all. We had to choose between the western part near Semur-en-Auxois and Montbard and the Côte d’Or wine region that runs from Dijon south to Santenay. We chose the latter because Beaune, in the center of this wine area, looked like a great town … Continue reading A Week in Burgundy

Lunch in Gascony

Lunch in Gascony

In mid-September we spent a week in Gascony with our friend Chris at a farmhouse in the countryside near Condom. We all arrived Thursday afternoon. Chris was jetlagged having flown from California and we were exhausted from our one hour time change 🙂 so we made a simple dinner at “home”. But the next morning we were ready to go and got several “must dos” accomplished the first day: coffee and croissant in a cafe, lunch … Continue reading Lunch in Gascony

European Experience Photos

Adam and a Cat

I was one of the judges of the European Experiences photo contest. People who have been on their tours sent in photos showing their experiences. Here are the 10 winners. My friends Kathy and Charley Wood, who run European Experiences, are celebrating five years of doing small group tours of France, Italy, England and Austria. They do a great job – as is shown by these beautiful photos. If you don’t want to spend days … Continue reading European Experience Photos

A Short Trip to the Loire Valley

In July we did a short trip to France – five nights in the Loire Valley followed by four nights in Normandy. We are currently living in England, so flew from Bristol Airport to Paris, picked up a rental car and drove four hours to the Loire Valley, west of Tours. We stayed in a vacation rental (gite) in the countryside north of the Loire River. It is flat in this part of the country, … Continue reading A Short Trip to the Loire Valley

Going to the Loire Valley and Normandy

Eastleach Turville, Cotswolds

I have booked a short vacation to France in July, from our temporary home in the Cotswolds. We are flying from Bristol to Paris, then driving to the Loire Valley for five nights. Then we drive up to Normandy, stopping on the way to see the Bayeux Tapestry, something we have both always wanted to see. Four nights in Normandy, then back to the Paris airport to fly to Bristol. In the Loire we will … Continue reading Going to the Loire Valley and Normandy

Vegetarian/Macrobiotic Restaurants in Paris

In two weeks we will be in Paris! Steve and I have not been to Paris since 1988. 21 years ago we started our big European Adventure (a year traveling in Europe) with ten nights in Paris. People have been born and gradutated from college in that time, and we never managed to make it back to Paris. We rented a lovely apartment in the 5th (in the Latin Quarter near the Sorbonne). I love to … Continue reading Vegetarian/Macrobiotic Restaurants in Paris

Comparison Shopping for Vacation Rentals

I have been shopping for vacation rentals for our summer trip. Finding great cottages in England is easy. Local agencies in England tend to be good, to have hand picked properties and offer fair prices. You may find a better price renting from an owner directly, but many owners list their places only with agencies, and I have found the prices are not that different. Now we are thinking about a week and a half … Continue reading Comparison Shopping for Vacation Rentals

European Experiences!

Introducing European Experiences, small group tours in Europe. My good friend Kathy Wood and her husband Charley have expanded their European small group tours  to include the Alps in Austria and Germany. For the last several years they have been leading groups to the Luberon in southern France. They offer a one week tour, based in the village of Bonnieux. They know this area well, having lived there for six months in 2004 and then … Continue reading European Experiences!

Planning a Trip to Southern France

I woke up this morning to a few inches of snow – the first snow of the year in Santa Fe – and realized that we need to start planning our next trip to Europe. We have been talking about spending two months in France in the winter like we did last year in the Cotswolds. This time we will go a bit later, maybe March and April. This keeps us in Santa Fe for … Continue reading Planning a Trip to Southern France
